Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng welcomed the announcement, telling The Malaysian Insider: “This is great news for George Town. We have to maintain our heritage and history and the state government intends to just that.”

Former Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the success in the bid is a boost to multiculturalism and tourism for Malaysia.

In George Town, the core areas encompass the historical sites of George Town, including the Lebuh Acheh historical enclave and sites such as the Lebuh Acheh Malay Mosque, Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Kling Mosque, the Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mariamman Temple, Khoo Kongsi, St George’s Church, Assumption Church, St Xavier’s Institution, Convent Light Street, Little India, the museum and court building, the commercial area of Beach Street, Fort Cornwallis, Esplanade, City Hall, the clan jetties and the port areas.

In Malacca, which was founded in the 1400s, historical sites near the St Paul’s Hill, the 17th-century Dutch Stadhuys buildings, Jonker Street with its Dutch-era buildings, Jalan Tukang Besi, Kampung Morten and Malacca River have been recognised as part of the world heritage sites. — TheMalaysianInsider

MAS northern region area manager Wan Mohd Ebrahem said the promotion was for travels between July 1 and Dec 14 booked online.

KUALA LUMPUR: The battle between the two local carriers AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines has turned up a notch after waging their fare wars.
Yesterday, AirAsia called on Malaysia Airlines to keep the competition fair and healthy and “not to take toys from its playground.”
Its group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes also questioned yesterday why MAS was not promoting zero fares for non-AirAsia routes such as London and Sydney, to give more options to customers.
He also challenged MAS managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Idris Jala to publicly deny or accept allegations that subsidies for international flights were used to promote domestic low-fare promotions.

AirAsia traffic resilient, says Fernandes

On the horizon, new destinations for AirAsia include Haikou in China, Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong. While AirAsia already flies to Macau and Shenzhen, which also serves the Hong Kong market, “we want to fly everywhere,” according to Fernandes.

There were customers who wanted to fly directly into Hong Kong and were willing to pay a higher fare for that “but it’ll still be better value than the full service airlines,” he added.

The newly-appointed agencies, VSA Versatile Service Agency and Uranus Travel & Tours (LLC), will provide new service that will significantly facilitate the visa application process in Dubai.

Visitors can now submit their visa application at either of these agencies, and will benefit from a new user-friendly web-based application “Submission of Application for Visa Electronically” (SAVE) which the agencies will use to forward the applications to the Consulate.

Save will also help boost security by enabling the Consulate to issue visa stickers with security-embedded features that can pre-empt forgery and electronically link all stored information to Singapore checkpoints and Missions around the world.

“The Singapore Tourism Board is delighted by these positive developments in visa application procedures, which we believe will further drive our impressive visitor growth from the UAE,” said Jason Ong, Area Director, Middle East and Africa, Singapore Tourism Board.

(Channel NewsAsia) - SINGAPORE: Jetstar Asia is in the clear to fly the Singapore-Malaysia route.

In a tale of twists and turns, reports from Malaysia on Tuesday said it may not be allowed to fly the route because of a clause in the Malaysia-Australia aviation agreement.

The Malaysian Transport Ministry clarified on Wednesday that although it has some Australian backing, the carrier can fly the route as its majority investors are from Singapore and it is a Singaporean airline.

It also noted that the carrier is a separate entity from Jetstar Australia, which is owned by Qantas.

Singapore’s Transport Minister Raymond Lim, said: “I am not sure if the report was referring to Jetstar or Jetstar Asia. Jetstar Asia is a Singapore carrier and is entitled to air rights from Singapore. My understanding is that Jetstar Asia has received approval from the KL authorities in this matter.”

Chong Phit Lian, CEO of Jetstar Asia, said: “I can’t say for sure what is happening on the other side but we know Jetstar Asia operates under the Singapore AOC and we have been given the rights – we’ll definitely fly from 1 February.”
